A "tree hole" to escape into (Dr Singsit) 02/07/2009

"In the past, only the so-called 'problem students' would abuse drugs or ketamine. But now even the well-behaved or bright ones do drugs. That's really troublesome." This is a remark made with a head-scratching gesture by a friend of mine who has years of experience in youth work.

Actually we are all worried about the problem of drug abuse among young people. In the past, among a typical class of students, only a few of those who were considered "marginal" would call for more supervision. But nowadays it seems all students are prone to drug addiction. The situation is practically getting out of hand.

But we can't put the blame on the Government alone. Over the years there has been no shortage of anti-drug campaigns. Unfortunately, even some of the "anti-drug ambassadors" have turned out to be victims of drug abuse themselves. Despite all the TV commercials with their "gentle reminder" kind of message or use of shock tactics, as we know all too well, the images and words in a 20-second commercial are probably all but lost on the young audience. They are really afraid of nothing.

With the exception of facing reality.

It seems Gen Y is really lost. To this generation, escapism is the only way out as there is no tomorrow, not even the motivation to live.… Hence it needs a "tree hole" to escape into. Ironically, the world of hallucinations induced by drugs would make a most tempting "tree hole". Therefore, drug abuse cannot be combated just by restricting young people's access to drugs. More importantly, young people should have their minds cleansed of the contamination of drugs, so that they will be able to find their strengths and purpose in life. And, above all, the meaning of life.
